This vase, which is strongly influenced by Classicism, is a very early example for a luxurious everyday object made of iron. After all, these kinds of objects were usually made of gilded bronze. While the ornament of the square base still uses Baroque shapes, the palmette friezes on the foot and the wall as well as the pellet frieze are clear evidence of the new style. Designs of vases by the French architect, ornament artist, and illustrator Jean-Charles Delafosse (1734–1789) could have served as a source of inspiration. These very quickly became popular within Europe. Anton Mathias Domanek (1713–1779) was the first director of the engraving school at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. The Habsburg royal house owned pieces of work made by him.
