Description: The small vase was done for Cesare Monti between 1638, the year of the first inventory, in which the painting is not mentioned, and 1650, the year in which it is mentioned as one of the objects donated by the Cardinal to Gallery. The different types of flowers, typical of a garden not a field, were studied in detail, then carefully and elegantly arranged on a black background that enhances their brilliant colors. According to some scholars, the refined composition could be hiding an allegory of the Society of Jesus.
