In 1962 Pablo Serrano chose to create a new series called Vault Men (Hombres-Bóveda), an evolution of Vaults for Man (Bóvedas Para el Hombre) started before 1960. His previous reflections on the human being and his refuge now led him to contemplate the union of two concepts: the individual and space. He created this sculpture by kneading clay first to later cast it in bronze. Here he is interested in clearly differentiating two spaces: the exterior, which is mortal, rough, and wild, a kind of human torso, and the interior, bright and brilliant, with polished metal, which is the spirit, the soul, where there is light—an illuminating metaphor for what is within every man and every woman.
