Hand-coloured depiction of Cuzco, the capital of the Inca Empire in the pre-Columbian period. When the Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro arrived in Cuzco in 1534, he called it "a very noble and great city". In the foreground, an Inca (ruler) is portrayed, being carried by servants and escorted by armed men. The illustration comes from the famous atlas of the cities of the world by the geographer Georg Braun and the engraver Franz Hogenberg.
