Veiled Chameleon (Cleared and Stained)

Field Museum

Field Museum
Chicago, United States

The veiled chameleon is one of many spectacular species of chameleon. While the animal itself is impressive, preparing the specimens by the process of clearing and staining to highlight its skeletal system adds another dimension. After the preserved chameleon is skinned and eviscerated, its muscle tissue is cleared using a digestive enzyme and a strong alkali. Dyes are then introduced which are absorbed by the bone (red) and cartilage (blue).
