Matsue-shi, Shimane-ken , Japan

Kurihara Chuji adored Turner from his time studying at the Tokyo Fine Arts School, and had a high level of interest in British landscape paintings. In 1912, Kurihara traveled to Great Britain, stayed in London for a span of approximately 15 years including a temporary return to Japan, and absorbed the traditional painting style of the British school of painting. From 1920-1923, he traveled on many occasions to Venice, which was deeply connected to Turner and Brangwyn (under whom he studied) and was a place he had yearned for. There, he produced seascape paintings. This work is one of the pieces painted during that period. Kurihara has brilliantly captured the swaying of light through his free, colorful brushwork.
