David Teniers, the Elder1638

Teniers the elder was the father of the famous artist of the same name and excelled at the creation of small scale paintings. This work shows the god of metallurgy, Vulcan, as he is visited by Venus, who has come to order armor for her son Aeneas. The metallic armor, the rocky face of the cave and the movement of the smoke all reveal Teniers' superior sense of object and his remarkable ability to create atmosphere.
