Christine Dean completed an artist residency at Penrith Regional Gallery in 2003. Dean’s continual focus on modernism offers an ongoing review and assessment of the philosophical foundations that underpinned the practices of Gerald and Margo Lewers as well as their contemporaries. The resulting works from this residency made direct references to artworks held in the Gallery Collection, including work by Margo Lewers, Lyndon Dadswell, Frank and Margel Hinder, Paul Hopmeier, Elwyn Lynn and Peter Upward. Other works make reference to academic critics such as Clement Greenburg and Terry Smith who were very influential to the development Australian art practice.
