Because of their contacts to their Roman neighbours, people in the Germanic regions became familiar with the use of wine and its enjoyment. Along with the wine, they also adopted Roman drinking customs. Whoever could afford it regaled his guests with Roman wine buckets, ladles and strainers, as well as drinking vessels. After the death of their refined owners the valuable exotic vessels were sometimes even reused as urns, like in this almost 2 000-year-old grave from Putensen.
