This glazed stoneware vessel was produced by Ladi Kwali one of the best known potters working in the Abuja pottery center founded by English potter Michael Cardew in the 1950s. When Ladi Kwali joined the pottery project in 1954 she was already an accomplished ceramicist producing beautiful hand built vessels for the local market. This pot is a typical example of Ladi Kwali's production in Abuja. Although the shape of the vessel and the iconography of the decoration recall traditional forms, the glazed finish is a clear mark of the style developed after the encounter with Cardew.
