Viaticum procession along the right side of the Parma Cathedral

GIACOPELLI GIUSEPPE1868

Collezione Fondazione Cariparma

Collezione Fondazione Cariparma
Parma, Italy

The oil on canvas represents a religious procession set in Parma which, coming from the church of San Giovanni Evangelista, runs along the side of the Cathedral and the Major Seminary. These are the buildings around Piazza Duomo, still present today: the complex of buildings constitutes one of the highest and most significant expressions of the city's religious, cultural and artistic history. In the painting, the priest advances followed by a small crowd of relatives and friends of the people for whom the Viaticum is intended, the Eucharist administered at home or in the hospital bed to the sick faithful, in danger of life, as spiritual food to face the extreme journey.
