Viceroy Tea Trophy

1918-01-01/1928-12-31

South Australian Maritime Museum

South Australian Maritime Museum
Port Adelaide, Australia

This shield was awarded for Port Adelaide's most iconic swimming race, the Swim through the Port. Both men and women won the race over its forty year history. The museum has several photographic portraits in its collection capturing champion swimmers posing with the shield.

Contestants of the Swim through the Port had to be members of the Port Adelaide Amateur Swimming Club. The gruelling 2.5km course began at the Commercial Rd ferry steps and finished in the Portland Canal. The swim was stopped in the mid-1960s because of poor water quality, but has recently resumed.

It is a large silver shield mounted on wood.
