Social activity was extremely important in the Great Spa Towns of Europe, and facilities developed for mixing and socialising in assembly rooms and conversation rooms, also known as Kurhauses or Kursaals which were used for ‘diversions’ such as gaming, reading and dancing. Casinos, theatres, opera houses, concert and dance halls can be found in most of the ‘Great Spas’.
