In December 1908, the artist S. Seymour Thomas commented on this work in a publicity release: "The portrait of the Vicomte de Manneville in hunting costume is very fine. The splendid head and silver coat of the dog, who looks lovingly into his master's face, are wonderfully done." Thomas kept this painting in his studio as an advertisement of his skills for nearly fifty years. Large, splashy, and grand, it is an excellent example of the artist's society portraiture. The artist was born in San Augustine, Texas, but enjoyed a dazzling career in New York and Paris.
