David Umbarger, a "forty-niner" from West Virginia, built this house on his homestead in the Santa Clara Valley in the 1870s, and it was moved to History Park in 1970. The furnishings, while not actually owned by the Umbargers, illustrate those typically found around 1870-95, the later years of the Victorian era. This kitchen is an example of the multiple functions this one room served: cooking, dining, heat from the stove, bathing in the wash basin, ironing, and sewing and mending clothing on the sewing machine.
