Developed by celebrated game designer American McGee and Rogue Entertainment, and released for the PC in 2000, American McGee's Alice was Electronic Arts' first published Mature-rated game. Despite the game's rating, it has sold more than 1.5 million copies and drew critical acclaim for its rich storytelling and beautiful created 3D world.

American McGee's Alice is a third-person action game based on Lewis Carroll's classic children's novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel Through the Looking-Glass. Unlike Carroll's books, American McGee's Alice is a psychological horror story about a young orphan girl who has been institutionalized for experiencing a severe mental breakdown after witnessing her family die in a house fire.

Set years after the events of Carroll's books, Alice, in her emotionally distraught state, returns to Wonderland to find it has become a dangerous place. Wonderland is now as fractured as Alice's mind. Players guide Alice through the newly perverted Wonderland, fighting off deadly creatures and reuniting with old friends, in an attempt to return the fairytale world to its original state and return Alice's sanity. The 2011 sequel, Alice: Madness Returns, continues the story after a new psychotic episode forces her return to Wonderland yet again. This time, Alice must explore the magical realm so that she may uncover memories and discover a dark truth about her past.

The gameplay of American McGee's Alice utilizes platforming and third person shooting elements. Alice must jump, run, dodge, and attack foes she encounters along her path. Alice's primary weapon is her infamous Vorpal Blade, which she uses to hack and slash enemies. Other weapons, or toys, are obtained as the player progresses through Wonderland. These include a deck of cards, a croquet mallet, the Jack-in-the-Bomb, jacks, a blunderbuss, the Deadtime Watch, demon dice, the ice wand, and the Jabberwock's Eye Staff. The sequel introduced new items like the pepper grinder, the hobby horse, clockwork bombs, and teapot cannon. Most weapons have a primary attack and secondary attack, giving the player a robust set of weaponry by the end of the game.
