Publisher Electronic Arts released the turn-based strategy game Centurion: Defender of Rome in 1990. Centurion transports players to Ancient Rome in the year 275 BC where they assume the role of a centurion in the Roman army. The goal is to become a Caesar and conquer the known world through success in military conquest and politics. Players must micromanage their provinces in order to maintain the happiness of their citizens. Unhappy citizens get rebellious, in which case players must adjust tax rates and finance and organize gladiator games and chariot races in order to boost morale. Players must also raise legions for military conquest. Battles occur in real-time and pit players against historical enemies of the Roman Empire including the Carthaginians and the Parthians. Players also meet and interact with historical figures such as Cleopatra, Hannibal and Scipio Africanus. The game is won when every province on the map is conquered.
