TSR, Inc., first known as Tactical Studies Rules, Inc., was the first and initially the most successful of the early publishers or role-playing games beginning with its publication of Dungeons & Dragons in 1974. Founded in 1976, rival firm Judges Guild sought permission from then-fledgling TSR to publish supplemental material, in the form of adventure modules, maps, and other material. Dave Arneson, one of the founders of TSR, initially gave Judges Guild a verbal agreement to publish this material, and the firms eventually made this arrangement official. Judges Guild materials found great popularity among players in the early 1980 but the firm was slow to modernize, remaining committed to earlier dungeon fantasy game types without the increasing realism that other makers increasingly offered. The contract with TSR lapsed in 1982, and the firm essentially went on extended hiatus in 1985. It resumed operation in 1999.
