A third generation console released for $199 in 1987, the Atari XE Video Game System was a game console based on the Atari 65 XE computer. It included both a full keyboard as well as a light gun and joystick controller, making it a combination gaming platform and home computer. Atari managers hoped this system would boost both video game and computer sales, as the XE was fully compatible with existing Atari 8-bit software and peripherals. It was followed by the Atari Lynx handheld and the Atari Jaguar console.
