Publisher and developer Origin Systems released Autoduel in 1985. Based on the board game Car Wars by Steve Jackson Games, Autoduel is a unique mix of driving, action, and role-playing game (RPG). Combining the traditional RPG elements of character statistics, exploration, and missions with arcade-style action, Autoduel captivated a wide audience. The first post-apocalyptic RPG, Autoduel is set in a futuristic United States where gangs and bandits roam the streets. Armored vehicles with mounted weapons are necessary for protection in the dangerous world of Autoduel. Players begin in New York City where they must earn money to purchase and customize a vehicle. Weapons include flame-throwers, lasers and machine guns, all of which are purchased at the weapon shop in town. The gameworld is large and consists of many American cities including Boston, Syracuse, and Atlantic City. Gameplay is open-ended. Players may participate in arena battles, fight opponents on the highway, earn money in Atlantic City casinos, or complete various courier missions. The salvage system is unique to Autoduel. After an opponent is destroyed the character may get out of his car and gather parts and weapons from the damaged vehicle to sell at salvage shops. Autoduel also features a unique saving system. Character death is permanent but the player may purchase a clone at the local Gold Cross to take the place of the deceased character. However, the clone must be purchased before the death of the character. Given the difficulty of the game, clones are a frustratingly expensive necessity. With its unique plot and style of gameplay, Autoduel holds an important place in the history of electronic games.
