Publisher Strategic Simulations Inc. released Gettysburg: The Turning Point in 1986. A turn-based strategy game, Gettysburg: The Turning Point received critical acclaim for its realistic and historically accurate features. Players assume the role of a Union or Confederate commander and guide their troops through the three day battle of Gettysburg. Victory is determined by number of causalities and possession of strategic locations. Tactical decisions produce realistic results and affect the outcome of the battle. Players must keep an eye on their ammunition supply as well as the morale and fatigue level of their troops as they make strategic decisions regarding battle tactics and the route and pace of deployed brigades. Gettysburg: The Turning Point introduced the factor of visibility to war-based strategy games. During the game visibility is often lessened due to smoke or black powder obscuring the view of the battlefield, an innovation that became a staple in modern war games.
