Star Wars: Episode I: Battle for Naboo is an arcade-style shooting game available to play on the Nintendo 64 and PC. While it does not share the same name of the series, Battle for Naboo serves as a spiritual sequel of the Rogue Squadron series. The game released in 2000, with Factor 5 and LucasArts once again co-developing it.

Unlike the three Rogue Squadron games, which occur throughout the timeline of episodes IV, V, and VI of the Star Wars films, Battle for Naboo takes place solely during the events of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. However, the basic gameplay mechanics remain largely the same as the first entry of the Rogue Squadron series. Players pilot various different ships inspired by the film, and also control land- and water-based vehicles for select occurrences in the game's 15 different levels. Most of the available ships start out locked when playing through the game initially, but levels can be replayed after completion to select alternative ships. Players also have the ability, in some cases, to swap ships while mid-level.

The method of measuring a player's performance during a level also remains unchanged from the first Rogue Squadron. Players receive medals at the end of each level, the color of which depends on certain actions performed during that level, such as how many enemies the player destroyed, how quickly the player completed the level, and how many friendly units the player saved. Collecting medals raises the player's level, which unlocks extra content as a reward. Bonus missions and ships unlock after obtaining all medals of a certain level, or higher, across all levels in the game. Players can also enter secret passwords to unlock these items, which include design sketches and audio commentary from the developers.

Factor 5 developed an entirely new game engine for Battle for Naboo. Aside from allowing for a greater draw-distance�how far into the distance the player can see that is detailed� the engine allowed the game to feature instances of falling rain or snow, without any drop in the game's frame rate.
