Star Wars Rogue Squadron III: Rebel Strike is an arcade-style action game available to play on the Nintendo GameCube. It serves as the third main entry of the Rogue Squadron series, following Star Wars: Rogue Squadron and Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader. Rebel Strike became the first game in the series to be developed solely by Factor 5, instead of sharing development with LucasArts.

As with Rogue Squadron and Rogue Leader, the original Star Wars trilogy provides the basis of Rebel Strike?s storyline. Original clips from the films join cut scenes, which play during the missions to help implement the story into the game. The gameplay follows the basic structure of the series, with players piloting different aerial ships to fight the Galactic Empire. However, Rebel Strike introduced third-person on-foot missions, usually while playing as Luke Skywalker, to complement the in-vehicle levels. These missions take place during iconic moments from the films, such as recuing Princess Leia from the Death Star, and fighting the AT-ATs on foot during the Battle of Hoth. While critics viewed the on-foot sequences to be the game?s low-point, due to its clunky controls, it still represented a chance Factor 5 took to be innovative with their series. Commands to friendly units, which developers introduced in Rogue Leader, can also be given while on-foot.

Progression in the game mirrors that of past titles in the series. Completing levels and meeting certain criteria awards players with different medals, which are then used to unlock more missions, ships, and bonus content, such as developer videos and concept art.

Rebel Strike introduced split-screen multiplayer into the series for the first time. Competitive multiplayer offers game modes as simple as dogfights to more complex modes such as attacking and destroying the other player?s base. Meanwhile, cooperative multiplayer allows gamers to re-play the entirety of Rogue Leader together. By increasing the difficulty of that campaign, the developers ensured that having an extra player would not make the game too easy to complete.
