Since its founding in 1923, The Walt Disney Company has become the largest media conglomerate in the world. The company gave birth to countless films, musicals, television shows, and theme parks. Many of Disney's characters, introduced through animation or film, have found new life in tie-in video games that give fans the opportunity to interact with beloved worlds and story lines.

In 1999, Walt Disney Pictures released "Tarzan," an animated film about a man raised with apes in the jungle. At the time, it was the most expensive animated movie ever made, and it was the first animated Disney movie to open at number one at the box office since 1995's "Pocahontas."

Disney Interactive released the "Tarzan Action Game," also known as "Disney's Tarzan," in 1999 to coincide with the release of the movie. Gamers play on the PlayStation, PC, Game Boy Color, or Nintendo 64, and control Tarzan as he learns how to be human and saves the jungle from poachers. The game proved successful, and Disney released a sequel entitled "Disney's Tarzan: Untamed" in 2001 for the PlayStation 2 and GameCube.

"Untamed" received mixed reviews from critics; they did not enjoy it as much as the first "Tarzan" game. Reviewers found the game too simple and difficult to control. Matt Casamassina of IGN called it "nearly as simple as the ape-man himself," and wrote, "this is still a fun game. It's just not a terribly deep one."

Like many other video games released for promotional purposes, the "Tarzan" series succeeded in giving players the opportunity to expand their movie experience, and in providing merchandise for film producers. Disney released "Tarzan" toys, clothes, books, and stuffed animals, as well another game in 2002. More than one decade later, the film, as well as its tie-in games, remains popular among Disney fans.
