Publisher Strategy First released Rails Across America in 2001. Rails Across America presents an intense look at the cutthroat world of the great railroad barons. Players begin in 1830 and build a railroad empire, guiding development through modern times and into the near future. Players control hundreds of tracks spanning across the United States and Canada. Players make strategic decisions when building their empire, including where to compete, where to expand, and when to call in favors from powerful figures. Victory is not based on money but on prestige. Prestige is gained by completing a transcontinental railroad, building the most tracks in a year, or dominating a region among other factors. Influence cards allow players to hold radio campaigns or bribe politicians in order to gain funds and influence. Players may file for bankruptcy when they run out of money. If used skillfully this feature may lead the player to rise up the ranks and come out stronger than ever. Strategic decision-making is key to becoming a railroad magnate.
