Deus Ex is an action role-playing video game developed by Ion Storm and published by Eidos Interactive in 2000. The game is a first-person shooter (FPS) and role-playing game (RPG) hybrid that seamlessly combines gaming genres to create a unique gaming experience.

The game takes places in a dystopian future where technology has advanced enough to make body augmentation a common occurrence. Through the use of cybernetics, nanotechnology, and psychological conditioning, the characters of Deus Ex use science to artificially improve traits like strength, agility, sight, and hearing. As players progress through locations, they gain experience points which are used to upgrade their character's augmentations, unlocking and improving their character's skills.

One of the most notable aspects of Deus Ex is the number of ways players can choose to play the game. Played from a first-person perspective, players can choose to engage in traditional melee and weapons based combat. However, the game's strongest feature is its stealth gameplay. Players can opt to sneak through locations in order to avoid detection and silently take down or kill enemies.

Deus Ex has been lauded by organizations like IGN and Gamasutra for its ambitious plot. As players become entrenched in the game world, a web of conspiracies is uncovered and players must decide whether to help or hinder the shadowy agents that wish to control the world. How players choose to play the game-whether they choose to play as stealthy pacifists, gun-toting killers, or any other combination of play-styles-can determine how events in the story will unfold.

The game's critical and commercial success helped spawn a franchise with the release of Invisible War in 2003 and Human Revolution in 2011. These sequels have expanded on the already robust mythology of Deus Ex by introducing new characters, different time periods, and additional combat and stealth skills. The mixture of diverse gameplay and richly detailed story allowed Deus Ex to claim the game of the year title in 200 from IGN, Gamespy, and countless other gaming critics.
