Call of Duty: Finest Hour became the first console installment of the popular first-person shooter series Call of Duty. Published by Activision in 2004, the game included two separate development teams: Spark Unlimited for the Sony PlayStation 2 and Microsoft Xbox consoles and Exakt Entertainment for the Nintendo GameCube console. Unlike previous installments Call of Duty and Call of Duty: United Offensive, the game appeared exclusively on consoles and became the first in the franchise not to include a PC release.

Finest Hour returns the series to the battlefields of World War II. Players still take on the role of soldiers from the American, British, and Russian perspective, but developers doubled the number of controlled player-characters from three to six. The 19 single-player missions span across the three different Allied fronts, and include both infantry and vehicular combat. Players must complete a set of objectives to finish every mission. The game features a wide array of authentic weaponry spread throughout each mission to aid players with their objectives. The health system remains intact from previous Call of Duty games, as players need to collect health kits scattered throughout the game to replenish any lost health from combat. Finest Hour introduced a hit-marker feature to the series, wherein a red marker pops up to confirm a player's successful hit of an enemy.

Finest Hour included a multiplayer feature for competitive player vs. player gaming, although capabilities vary from console to console. The Xbox supported both online play and up to 32 players in local play through system link technology, and Sony's PlayStation 2 supported online play for up to 16 players. In contrast, Nintendo's GameCube did not offer any online multiplayer options at all. When available, multiplayer consisted of only four different game modes across eight total maps, which was a considerable drop-off from both Call of Duty and Call of Duty: United Offensive.

Although Call of Duty currently enjoys a huge amount of success on gaming consoles, both critics and gamers originally received Finest Hour with mixed feelings. Although the game stuck to many of the core values that fans loved, there was a notable step-down graphically on the console version of the game when compared to the previous PC versions.
