The Sony PlayStation 2 is the best-selling video game console of all time, with over 100 million units sold worldwide. The PS2 (as it is commonly known) has a broader age-range appeal than its main rivals, the Nintendo GameCube and the Microsoft Xbox. Released in 2000, the PS2 was backwards-compatible with Sony's previous-generation console, the PlayStation, but featured better graphics and more processing speed. Resident Evil Code: Veronica X is one game that accurately showcased the power the PS2 possessed. The survival horror title, developed by Capcom, was originally released for the Sega Dreamcast as Resident Evil Code: Veronica in 2000 before being ported to the PS2 one year later. The game featured Claire Redfield, a survivor of the events in Resident Evil 2, and her older brother Chris Redfield, a former S.T.A.R.S. (Special Tactics and Rescue Service) member and one of the protagonists from the first game in the series. Players control Claire for the first half of the game, only accessing Chris' quest once this is completed. The game uses tank controls, which let the character pivot when pressing toward the left or right, or in the direction the character faced when pushing up. Code: Veronica introduced the antagonistic Alfred and Alexia Ashford, and was the first Resident Evil entry to occur outside Raccoon City. It was also the first game not initially released on a Sony system. Resident Evil Code: Veronica X included new cutscenes not available on the Dreamcast edition and sold over two million copies, making it a highly successful addition to the franchise.
