In 2009, Eidos Interactive published Batman: Arkham Asylum, an action-adventure video game by British game developer Rocksteady Studios.
Created by famed comic book artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger, the character of Batman first appeared in Detective Comics #27 in May 1939. Since then, Bruce Wayne, and his alter-ego Batman, has become one of the most iconic and recognizable superheroes ever created. In addition to appearing countless comic books, the Batman franchise has spawned radio programs, live action and animated television shows, a dozen theatrical films, and numerous other video games.

Written by acclaimed Batman writer, Paul Dini, Arkham Asylum is unique in that the game's plot is based completely on the comic book source material. Arkham Asylum is notable for reuniting many of the voice actors from the classic Batman: The Animated Series cartoon with Kevin Conroy, Mark Hamill, and Arleen Sorkin reprising their roles as Batman, Joker, and Harley Quinn.

The game starts with Batman escorting the recently captured Joker through the Arkham Asylum for the Criminally Insane. After an unfortunate turn of events, Joker escapes custody and Batman is forced to spend the night navigating traps, fighting armed thugs, and searching for clues to stop Joker's nefarious plans. On the way, Batman encounters several other supervillains housed within the asylum.

Batman: Arkham Asylum is played from an over-the-shoulder perspective. Combat utilizes three primary attack movements-attack, stun, and counter-that can be combined while moving smoothly between targets in large groups. Players can also opt for a stealthy approach to certain battles by hiding in grates under floors, dropping from overhead fixtures, and performing silent takedowns to pick off enemies one at a time. Additionally, Batman has access to tools from his infamous toolbelt, including a grapple gun, batarang, and a zip-line launcher.

Despite being an inexperienced developer, having made only one game prior to Arkham Asylum, Rocksteady received numerous accolades for the game. The game won Game of the Year awards from Game Developers Choice Awards and the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA).

In 2011, Rocksteady released the sequel to Arkham Asylum, Batman: Arkham City. This game takes place a year after the original, after Gotham City Mayor Quincy Sharp has walled off a section of the city in order to turn it into a massive prison complex run by the tyrannical Hugo Strange. When Bruce Wayne publicly criticizes the Arkham City project, he's captured and locked inside as a political prisoner. While inside, Wayne must don his batsuit in order to deal with supervillains battling for control of Arkham City and uncover the secrets behind Strange's mysterious "Protocol 10" plan.

Batman: Arkham City received much of the same acclaim of its predecessor, including a Best Action Game 2012 BAFTA award and Adventure Game of the Year from the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences (AIAS) awards.

With its commercial and critical success, Rocksteady's Arkham series has become one of the most successful and loved Batman video game franchises ever made.
