Released in 2010, Heavy Rain is a psychological thriller developed by Quantic Dream for the Playstation 3. Heavy Rain is an adventure game that features four playable protagonists with intertwining stories. As players explores, they uncover clues to the identity of the Origami Killer, a serial killer who kidnaps and drowns young boys.
The game is segmented into chapters, with players typically controlling one character per chapter. The first of these protagonists is Ethan Mars, an architect suffering from psychological trauma after an accident killed his oldest son and left him in a coma. When his youngest son is kidnapped by the Origami Killer, Ethan is presented with a series of trials to find his son. Next is Scott Shelby, a former police officer turned private detective investigating the Origami Killer case. Throughout the game Shelby visits family of the victims of the Origami Killer to ask them questions about their respective cases. Later in the game Shelby teams up with the mother of one of the victims, Lauren Winter. Next is Norman Jayden, an FBI profiler who has been called in to assist on the Origami Killer case. Jayden uses an experimental device known as Added Reality Interface (ARI) which consists of a pair of specialized computer glasses that enhance Jayden's vision, detect and analyze clues, and record information. The final playable character is Madison Paige, an investigative journalist who suffers from insomnia and horrifying nightmares. In addition to her investigation of the Origami Killer, Paige befriends Ethan Mars and tries to help him during his trials.
As an adventure game, players move characters around locations in order to discover objects or interact with non-player characters (NPCs). Choices players make as one character-such as deciding if Ethan will attempt to complete any of the Origami Killer's trials, and if he is successful or not-can dramatically change the outcome of the game. It is even possible for characters to die at various points in the game due to player actions. Heavy Rain utilizes the technique of Quick Time Events (QTE) where players are prompted to perform an action-typically, pressing a button on the controller-in order to successfully trigger an event scene. While QTEs are often criticized for being overly simplistic, Heavy Rain has been praised for effectively incorporating this style of gameplay into the game's mature narrative, particularly through its use of motion-sensitive controls.
In addition to being critically acclaimed, Heavy Rain was a commercial success. In the month of its release, Heavy Rain was the tenth-best selling game in North America, and as of 2011 the game has sold more than 2 million copies.
