Developed and published by Capcom in 2009, Resident Evil 5 became the seventh installment in the Resident Evil series. The franchise, known as Biohazard in Japan, coined the term survival horror, a genre characterized by limited ammunition and health, dark and complex environments, and a feeling of isolation due to a low number of non-player characters. Released for PlayStation 3, Microsoft Windows, and Xbox 360, gamers and critics alike praised the game's ability to create a truly terrifying atmosphere. The game, viewed in an over-the-shoulder third-person perspective, centers on two characters: Chris Redfield and Sheva Alomar, both members of the Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance (B.S.A.A.). The player alternatively controls both Chris and Sheva based on the plot of the game. Continuing after the events of Resident Evil 4, Chris and Sheva must investigate a bioterrorist threat in the African desert. They find that many of the locals have been subjected to a parasitic virussimilar to Las Plagas from Resident Evil 4that has turned them into Majini, humanoid life forms that can still wield weapons. Faced with mysteries of secret and illegal human test subjects in an underground laboratory, plus missiles armed to release the virus on a global scale, Chris and Sheva must destroy their enemies, rescue their allies, and, most importantly, survive. Although the gameplay is very similar to that of Resident Evil 4, for the first time, Resident Evil 5 utilized motion capture imaging for the video cutscenes, to make the characters as physically realistic as possible. This is also the first Resident Evil game to include offline and online cooperative modes, where two players can interact in a joint venture, or separate to complete singular challenges in the main story mode. In this mode players can also exit and enter at any time throughout the game, and unlock minigames or extra content after the completion of the game. Another commercial and critical success for the franchise, Resident Evil continues to spawn sequels, novels, and even a film series.
