"The truth is out there," and in 1998, Fox Interactive made it available for PC and PlayStation. Based off the popular television series, Fox released "The X-Files Game" in between the show's fifth and sixth seasons, and right before the feature film "The X-Files: Fight the Future" came out. The game brought to life beloved characters such as FBI Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, Walter Skinner, and the Smoking Man. It also introduced new characters Agent Willmore and Detective Astadourian.

This point-and-click adventure game gave players the opportunity to solve their own paranormal mystery. Gamers play as Agent Willmore and must track down Agents Mulder and Scully, who are missing. Many of the game's plot aspects fit right into the television series. One plotline involves aliens taking over different human bodies, and writers make many references to some of the show's other mysteries.

Like other interactive movie games, players can influence the outcome through different variables. For example, certain conversational responses can evoke positive emotions, while others cause characters to become mad. This affects the clues that players can receive. Many of the actors who starred in the television show appeared in "The X-Files Game." Producers filmed over six hours of footage for the game's many different cut scenes.

The game received mixed reviews from critics, mainly because of the easiness of game puzzles and the fact that the game required seven different discs to play. Claire Wood of Adventure Gamers wrote, "this game oozes style," and that "As an interactive episode of The X-Files' the game is an undeniable success." The use of a new character as the game's protagonist made it accessible to non-fans as well as hard-core fans, and in general, players enjoyed the game. Developers considered "The X-Files" a success; it sold around one million copies and in 2004, Fox released a sequel entitled "The X-Files: Resist or Serve."

"The X-Files" ran for nine seasons, led to two full-length movies, and inspired two successful video games. It remains a pop culture staple and paved the way for many other television series, such as "Lost," "Fringe," and "Bones."
