The Virtual Boy is a video game console developed by Nintendo and released in both Japan and the US in 1995. It was the first console capable of producing "true 3D graphics," was sold for around $180. The Virtual Boy was designed by Gunpei Yokoi, who was well known for his past successes in developing the Game Boy and Game & Watch handheld consoles, as well as the very popular Metroid series of games. Unfortunately, the console was considered a disaster, and production was halted within a year of its appearance on the market. In 2007, the Virtual Boy was listed as the fifth Ugliest Product in Tech History by PC World. Only 22 games were ever released for this system, and only 14 ever made their way to the United States. However, this scarcity makes the system and its games popular collector's items.
