Released in 2003 by the Icelandic development company CCP games, EVE Online is a space-based massively-multiplayer online role-playing game set 21,000 years in the future. The game is known as a persistent world, meaning it continues to develop and change even when players are offline. With more than 7,800 star systems available for visitation, EVE is one of the largest MMO's ever created. It is also known for its complexity and high learning curve, with players controlling a complicated economy, political system, and even allowing piracy. EVE is especially notable for the amount of influence players have over the development and oversight of the game, with CCP hosting a Council of Stellar Management that allows nine players elected by the community to represent the interests of the game's subscribers.
