Sony Online Entertainment released PlanetSide in 2003. As one of the few successful massively-multiplayer online first-person-shooter (MMOFPS) video games, PlanetSide allowed up to 399 players to battle together on the same map. In the game, players choose between three factions - the Terran Republic, New Conglomerate, and Vanu Sovereignty - and fight to gain control of the planet Auraxis. Sony released two expansions for the game - Core Combat (2003) and Aftershock (2004) - during its 13-year-long run. The game officially went offline in July 2016. The game's popularity led to a sequel, PlanetSide 2, released in 2012. PlanetSide 2 holds a Guinness World Record for hosting the largest first-person shooter battle in any video game, with over 1158 players.
