BioShock is a first-person shooter (FPS) game developed by 2K Boston-later named Irrational Games-and released in 2007. The game has since blossomed into a highly regarded franchise.

The game is set in the 1960s, inside the fictional city of Rapture. Founded by wealthy industrialist Andrew Ryan, Rapture is an Art-Deco metropolis located several miles under the sea. Ryan built the city to be an unregulated, laissez-faire style capitalist haven for the world's best and brightest minds. The game draws heavy inspiration from the writings of author and philosopher Ayn Rand. Many of the game's character's and settings-most particularly, Andrew Ryan-are based loosely on Rand's book, Atlas Shrugged. However, Bioshock features a drastically different outcome to its city than the one in Atlas Shrugged. Instead of finding a growing and bustling city, players are introduced to Rapture long after it has been ravaged by addiction, greed, and civil unrest as a result of socio-economic disparity among the population.

Bioshock is viewed from a first-person perspective with players using a variety of weapons in combat. As players progress through different stages, they can discover and purchase new items and skills. A major feature of the Bioshock's combat is the super-human powers players can acquire through the use of DNA altering materials known as ADAM. However, the addictive and mentally damaging nature of ADAM is partially responsible for the fall of Rapture and many of the enemies the player encounters throughout the game.

BioShock has been praised for its mature and intelligent storytelling, which helped it earn awards like the 2007 "Game of the Year" title from organizations like IGN and the British Academy of Film and Television Arts. In 2012, Bioshock was featured among other notable video games in the Smithsonian Instituion's exhibit "The Art of Video Games". Bioshock's highly stylized design and politically charged plot earned the game a place in both art and video game history.
