Bungie Studios developed a companion game to Halo 2 and Halo 3, published by Microsoft and titled Halo 3: ODST. Released in 2009 for Xbox 360, this first-person shooter contains similar themes and strategies as its predecessors in the Halo franchise but also possesses a few new elements. In ODST, the engaging storyline which centers on an interstellar war being fought between humanity and an alien alliance known as the Covenant continues, but from a different point of view. Players act as elite members of the United Nations Space Command known as Orbital Drop Shock Troopers,??or ODSTs, which have never before been utilized as Halo protagonists. Events pick up toward the end of Halo 2, where players are put into an open world??environment in the futuristic but destroyed Kenyan city of New Mombasa. In ODST?s campaign mode, players must explore the ruined city to find their missing teammates. The hostile environment of New Mombasa is full of alien invaders, enemy sharpshooters, and gangs that are looking to ambush the player. Exploring New Mombasa, the player finds pieces of fellow soldiers? equipment that, through flashbacks, helps piece together the story of what occurred in the city. The majority of the campaign mode consists of these flashback memory sequences. New to the series is ODST?s Firefight??cooperative option, in which players battle never-ending hordes of enemies and are awarded points for longest survival times. Throughout the ten Firefight levels, players are forced to constantly change strategies in order to adapt to challenging environments and accomodate the playing style of other gamers during cooperative play. In these levels, players must defend a limited amount of supplies and share lives with others gamers. Another new element that forces players to think strategically is the fact that ODSTs die much more easily that the usual protagonist, Master Chief. Players must approach gameplay more warily in order to survive. The multiplayer section of ODST remains exactly the same as Halo 3, with only three new maps. Critics and gamers consider ODST another success for the franchise, with the engaging story, emotional musical score, and quality graphics keeping Halo Nation??fans satisfied.
