This photograph is of a small-scale replica of Richmond Barthé’s statue of Jean Jacques Dessalines. It is most likely made of clay. According to the artist’s biographer, Dr. Margaret Vendryes, Haiti's President Dumarsais Estime commissioned Barthé to create a 40-foot equestrian status of Jean Jacques Dessalines in 1948. The image was not unveiled, however, until 1953 at Place des Héros de l'Indépendence in Port=au-Prince.
