The Palace Museum
Beijing, China

This sculpture is carved from Hetian jade from the western region known as Xinjiang. Carved in the round, the work shows various methods such as engraving, deep and shallow relief, and intagliated lines used to complete this three-dimensional rendition of an original scenery painting with figures. The painting Nine Elders of Huichang (Huichang jiulao tu) depicts the story of the fifth year of the Huichang reign (845) of the Tang dynasty in which Bai Juyi and eight other famous literati held a banquet at Mount Xiang in Henan Province.
