This densely coloured, layered painting by the artist Leonard Rosoman (1913-2012), is a view from a friend’s garden in Alwoodley in Leeds. The outlook beyond the garden fence depicts the Kilburn White Horse in North Yorkshire, dating from 1857. The outline of the horse was marked out by the Kilburn village schoolmaster and his pupils by digging into the limestone underneath. The Horse is not visible from as far as Leeds so its incorporation into the view is wholly fantastical.
