A man in winter clothing, a captains hat and a gun looks scouts from a rock on Bear Island. On the beach behind him, other men handle their rowboat. Behind them again, hundreds of sea birds live on very steep rocks. Far away on the sea is the big sailboat the men possibly arrived in.

Bear Island is the southernmost island of the Norwegian Svalbard archipelago, located roughly halfway between Spitsbergen and the Norwegian mainland.

Print made by Sabatier after a painting by F.A. Biard. This print is part of "Atlas Historique et Pittoresque", published in 1842-1852 for "Voyages de la Commission Scientifique du Nord" about the Recherche expedition.
