View of Castello di Rivoli

Giovanni Paolo Panini1723 - 1724

Palazzo Madama

Palazzo Madama
Torino, Italy

One of a series of views commissioned from various artists by Victor Amadeus II in 1723 to give an idea of the residence while it was being reconstructed. The Castello di Rivoli was built during the Middle Ages and restructured by Emanuel Philibert and Charles Emmanuel I, but it was set on fire and destroyed in 1693, during the war against the French. Filippo Juvarra’s design, which was to have turned it into a magnificent residence capable of competing in grandeur with the finest palaces in Europe, was never completed.
