View of Diamond Head from the north (rear of Diamond Head), looking across suburb of Kaimuki. Diamond Head, located at the eastern end of Waikiki, Honolulu, in the southeastern corner of the island of Oahu, is Hawaii's most recongnised landmark. It is a volcanic *tuff* cone, part of a series of the Honolulu volcanic eruptions which took place approx. 100,000 years ago. A 1km, very steep walking trail to the summit of the crater rim, offers spectacular views of Honolulu and the island of Oahu. Built in 1908, the trail was part of the Oahu's coastal defense and Fort Kruger, a military reservation was established inside the crater in 1909.
