Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (CSMVS), formerly the Prince of Wales Museum was completed in 1914 in the Indo-Saracenic style of architecture. Designed by George Wittet, consulting architect to the Government of Bombay from 1907, this structure combined recognisable Hindu and Islamic features into a new architectural idiom.
The museum's prominent central dome, in focus here, was inspired by the imposing dome over the Gol Gumbaz mausoleum in Bijapur, in the southern Indian state of Karnataka. Wittet considered the Gol Gumbaz, an architectural marvel constructed in the mid-17th century, one of the largest domed spaces in the world.
In contrast to the Islamic dome, notice the horizontal band of carved stone brackets underneath, which are distinctive of Hindu temple design.
