View of Montreal from the eastern slope of Mount Royal

In 1831, in the newspaper La Minerve, Irish painter James Duncan invited the public to a viewing at the courthouse of his large panorama of Montreal. This young unknown artist, who had arrived here the previous year, was seeking public recognition of his talent. The immense painting is a polished work that faithfully depicts how the city had expanded in contrast to the mountain, which remained pastoral.
