Gigante, who was a painting teacher of the princesses, regularly visited the royal estates. Between 1854-56 he had the opportunità to create a group of eleven watercolors depicting the major locations throughout the Kingdom of Naples. This painting, as one of the group, presents a view of Naples from via Posillipo, animated in the foreground by a picturesque gathering of commoners. Here, the artist immortalizes the Neapolitan landscape from this particular vantage point that became one of the most famous of the 19th century.
