From the hill of Montmartre, Vincent van Gogh painted the souterly view of Paris. Van Gogh lived in Montmartre with his brother Theo. The loosely painted sky dominates the painting, partly because of the low horizon. The buildings in the distance are disproportionately large; Van Gogh may have wanted to make them identifiable to increase the sale value of the work. In the middle, the dome of the Pantheon is visible; on the right, light is falling on the Louvre.
