By 1825, first industrial buildings had appeared in the suburbs of Tallinn, such as a brickworks in Kopli and a sugar factory in Maarjamäe. The naval port and fortress, shipyards, barracks, and warehouses constructed in the 18th century formed a separate district by the harbour.
The sugar factory was founded by J. G. Clement and operated here in Maarjamäe from 1811 to 1837. The building was later converted into a distillery and burned down in 1869.
