Colorized version that was simplified for the chronicle and based on the popular print of Heinrich Vogtherr the Elder.
This woodcut from 1545 shows a linen cloth that has been laid out to bleach in the meadows in front of the city. In winter, the hills surrounding the town are covered in white snow, while in summer they are draped in linen, earning St. Gallen the title of the "White city."
