View of the double portal crowned by the washing of the feet

The majestic access portal to the Pauline Chapel was probably built on a design by Maderno.
The solution of the double portal, of which only the right door is true, brilliantly solved the problem of having a portal centered on the internal wall of the Chapel, which has different dimensions than the Hall.
The wooden doors, like all those in the room, were made in 1616 by the cabinetmaker Giovan Battista Soria, who was also responsible for the construction of the ceiling.

The portal is crowned by a large high-relief lunette by Taddeo Landini depicting the washing of the feet; the sculpture was made in 1578 for the Basilica of San Pietro and was transported to the Quirinale in 1616.
The two angels on the tympanum are the work of the sculptors Guglielmo Berthelot (angel on the left) and Pietro Bernini (angel on the right); originally they supported the coat of arms of Pope Paul V, later replaced by the metal crown visible today.
